Melanie Hanson,

My name is Melanie I am a Registered Mental Health Intern and recent graduate earning my Master of Education in Counseling and Human Development as well as a certificate in Substance Abuse. My Bachelor of Arts was in English Literature with a minor in Studio Art. Professionally, I worked with library services before moving into community mental health and private practice.
I offer an eclectic approach to therapy. I operate mostly through a humanistic lens, believing in acknowledging everyone's potential with empathy and unconditional positive regard. I let the client lead the way while offering support and guidance. I also pull from attachment-based, existential, and narrative therapy. Therapy is a collaborative process, and our approach can be tailored to best suit you.
My professional goals are to complete certifications in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). Other topics I am interested in are Somatic Experiencing, Acceptance and Commitment and Narrative Therapy.
I believe that clients are the expert in their own lives and strive to help bring awareness to the personal narrative that may be influencing how you see yourself, your relationships, and the world. Our therapeutic relationship is important, and we can create a space for you to be your authentic self. Together we can learn new, healthy ways of relating.
Without sacrificing professionalism, I leave formalities at the door. If I expect you to be real with me, I have to be real with you. I pride myself on being relatable, understanding, and having a good sense of humor.
Outside of therapy I enjoy going to see live music, hiking, and spending time with my animals. I like to engage my creative side in various art projects and must listen to music loudly every day. I enjoy exploring transpersonal ideas of consciousness and how this can bring about greater self-awareness. Causes that are important to me include civil rights, racial inequality, gender equality, and animal rights. I hold the egalitarian belief in equality for all. I aim to dismantle corrupt and biased power structures through radical empathy.
I love being a mental health professional because being alongside someone when they reclaim and cultivate their sense of self is an honor and a privilege.
